6th Annual Dakota Five-0
Sept. 3, 2006
Spearfish, SD
Ridge Riders of the Black Hills Mountain Bike Club put on the 6th
Annual Dakota Five-0 for a growing number of riders. 180 riders
showed from a number of states, for this challenging, scenic, 50
mile ride.
The ride started at Spearfish Park Bandshell with Smokey Bear dropping
his hand to start the ride. Riders hammered up a 3 mile gravel climb
to Tinton Trail. Black Hills local Jon Nelson and two Minnesota
riders, led the lead crew. Luke Nelson team Penn Cycle from Minnestoa
was the first rider to the Tinton Trail winning $25.00. Jon went
on to win the 40 & Over class winning $150. Jon Rehorst of Rapid
City (Team Scheels) was the fastest man of the day in Men’s
39 & Under and the over all winner of $300.00. The fastest woman,
Roxanne Abbott from Nebraska, was in the 39 & Under class and
also received a $300 cash prize. The Single Speed class boomed with
20 wild-men riding this year, and 5 wild-women. There was also a
large number of 50 and older, that finished well.
Riders were treated to 4 official feed stations throughout the race.
Volunteers served food and drinks to replenish riders and were greatly
appreciated. At the finish area in Spearfish Park riders were greated
by excited fans, a catered meal by Bayleaf Café, snack and
drinks courtesy of Crow Peak Brewery & Farmers Market, and Music
in the band shell. Ridge Riders gave out $5,000 in cash and prizes.
Many sponsors of the event were on hand to give out goodies and
everyone received prizes.
Thanks to all the local businesses that made this possible.
